Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a cap that’s attached to the top of a tooth that’s broken or damaged by trauma or infection. The crown protects the tooth from further damage while restoring its shape, strength, size, and aesthetic.

Why Do People Need Crowns?

There are a variety of reasons why Dr. Alfano may recommend a dental crown, including:

How Dr. Alfano Places Your Crown

The dental crown procedure is a two-visit treatment option.

During your first visit to our Balboa Island office, Dr. Alfano will use x-ray imaging to collect data on the tooth and ensure there is no infection. If it’s not, then root canal therapy might be required before you get your crown.

Once Dr. Alfano has examined you, we’ll use a local anesthetic to numb your tooth and the surrounding gum tissue. The next step in preparing your tooth for a crown is to reshape the tooth.

We will use a digital scanner to create a perfect impression of your mouth. Dr. Alfano will use a shade guide to identify the color of your natural smile so our laboratory can make a crown that blends in perfectly with your smile. We’ll provide an attractive temporary crown to cover and protect your damaged tooth while you wait for your permanent restoration.

Your second visit to our office involves Dr. Alfano removing your temporary crown and checking that the new crown for defects. If everything looks good, we’ll numb your mouth and attach your permanent restoration.

The placement of your crown doesn’t take much time at all—your second office visit could take as little as 20 minutes.

Dental Crown Longevity
